I just realized that I haven’t taken the time yet to notate my goals for 2015. Time to remedy that.
In the past, I’ve often been guilty of biting off more than I can chew in regard to goal setting. Being spread so thin in so many directions at once is little more than setting oneself up for failure. In that spirit, I’m only going to set goals in four different aspects of life for 2015: Physical Wellbeing, Career Development, Familial Fun, and Getting my Hands Dirty. Here’s a brief outline of each of those in alphabetical order:
I’m at the point in my life where I have diverse interests and skillsets that need to be harnessed into a particular focus much like base metals are refined into a stronger alloy. It’s time to channel each of these strengths and design my career rather than let others pigeonhole me.
Realistically, what does this mean? It means that instead of chasing fortune and glory through corporate avenues I am going to find an exciting company that believes in their employees and to do my best to tie my raft to theirs. To that end I am adding new software skills, brushing up my social networking presence, and in general trying to live the life I hope to achieve soon.
I’ve got a lot going on, we all do, but none of it is more important than my children Joshua and Penelope and my wonderful wife Megan, the moon of my life. I’m doing my best to be mindful that my time with them as small children is precious and running out every day. To that end I’m taking at least one day per month as a family fun day. The first one is coming up next Tuesday, March 10th. I’m taking the day off from work and my current plan is to picnic and visit the zoo, but we shall see what the weather and the day bring.
Getting my Hands Dirty
Producing at least some of my own food is a goal that is always on my plate (pun intended). Right now we’re in the process of rebuilding our chicken coop and I need to get cracking with that, making a compost bin, and getting the Spring garden ready. I’m also planning on spending time at many of the permablitzes put on by the SC Upstate Permaculture Society to build some social capital and hang out with awesome people!
I’ve lost a lot of weight (over 100 lbs!!) but I still have a ways to go and l’m currently sitting at a two-month plateau. Megan and I have recently embraced Keto and I’m trying to find the best way to fit strength training into my schedule. Very soon we will have warmer weather so I can start hitting the Swamp Rabbit Trail on my bike and hiking at Table Rock. Those last two can also be family activities–yay for stacking goals! My plan in this area is to stick to my nutritional goals, make sure I’m hitting minimum levels of activity, and that I make time for at least one fun physical activity every couple of weeks.
Well there you have it. There are lots of other things I want to do (learn to play my cigar box guitar, start building a Raspberry Pi project. etc ad infinitum) but right now I’m focusing on the above.
What are your goals for 2015? Let’s talk about them, and maybe we can help keep each other on the path to victory!
